Grade 321 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel designed to resist intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (425–850°C). 321H is the higher-carbon variant intended for service at elevated temperatures where slightly higher creep and tensile strength at temperature are required—making 321H a preferred choice when the equipment sees sustained high-temperature exposure.
Sumer Metal Industries emphasizes traceability and certification: each heat of 321 / 321H tubing is supplied with mill test certificates (MTC) that show chemistry, mechanical test results, heat/lot numbers and applicable standards. Titanium stabilizes the alloy by binding with carbon and nitrogen, preventing carbide precipitation during welding and enhancing resistance to intergranular corrosion, making the tubes more durable in high-temperature environments.
The primary difference lies in the carbon content. Stainless Steel 321H has a higher carbon content (0.04–0.10%) than 321 (max 0.08%), providing improved high-temperature strength while maintaining corrosion resistance.
